Day 2: Hanoi city tour – Street food Tour

After breakfast at the hotel, dive into the sights sounds and aromas of Hanoi. Start with Ho Chi Minh Complex including his Mausoleum (Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed all afternoon, every Monday & Friday, and from late September until December), the Presidential Palace, the historic Stilt house, and the One Pillar Pagoda.

Continuing on our journey through Hanoi we drive to Tran Quoc Pagoda (which means “Stabilizing the Nation”), the oldest pagoda constructed in the sixth century in the Westlake and also a famous attraction for pilgrims.

From there we head to the Temple of Literature. Originally built in honor of Confucius by Emperor Ly Thanh Tong in 1070, a university was added to the grounds six years later. The university provided education to the royal family and children of the aristocracy or “mandarins”.

Around 12.30: you will have lunch at a restaurant. Afterward, you’ll visit Hoan Kiem Lake, the heart and soul of Hanoi. We then take a short drive to visit the Museum of Ethnology, a museum of the 54 officially recognized Ethnic Groups in Vietnam (Ethnology Museum is closed every Monday).

From 16.30 – 17.00, return your hotel for some rest before starting the evening local food discovery. We start our walking tour of Hanoi’s largest covered market, Dong Xuan. Along the perimeter of the market, dozens of street hawkers sell a staggering variety of produce from live seafood to exotic fruits and spices. Your expert English-speaking local guide will give you an insight into the intricacies and traditions of Vietnamese food culture including details on ingredients and historical backgrounds of popular northern dishes.

Walking through the maze of bustling streets that make up Hanoi’s Old Quarter, we tempt our taste buds with the famed Hanoi dish Banh Cuon at a local eatery. Watch in awe as the skilled chefs demonstrate for you how this tasty dish is put together. Continuing into the atmospheric heart of the Old Quarter, we wander past street stalls and quiet residential lanes where you can observe local life that has changed little since Hanoi was founded over 1000 years ago.

Our next stop is a food stall for you to try our Bread, a little food stall with a few typical tiny Vietnamese chairs on the sidewalk where we enjoy the delicious and fresh baguettes while observing the neighborhood.

Next one is another famous dish – Bun Cha. Bun Cha consisting of vermicelli, herbs and grilled pork. At this Hanoi’s best-kept secrets, a hidden café we will watch the demonstration and then try some egg coffee, a scrumptious local delicacy.

Continue to other food stalls near Hoan Kiem lake where we try some dishes such as Che “Vietnamese style pudding” and Nom “papaya salad with beef”.

It’s then time for dessert as we venture down a small alley to join in the local tradition of feasting on fresh fruit served in a cup and smothered with crushed iced – this specialty is one not to be missed!

A great service if you want this

I was a female solo traveller and from my first email, I was made to feel important. I detailed the countries I wanted to go to and the time frame. You can also tell them all the things that you want to see and do. I had nothing specific so I left it to my consultant, Helen. She only had 1 month to organise for me to go to Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia for 4 weeks.
Over a short time she came up with an itinerary. We worked through this with a few small changes – but I always felt that nothing was too much trouble for them to sort out for me. If I did not understand something, it was explained to me. I received all the necessary information to do my visas online and all the internal flights and travel were organised. I did not want 5 star hotels so went with 3 star. It was great, all the hotels were right in the middle of the action, were very clean and friendly – after all, you are only sleeping there a short while so gives you more to spend on your holiday. Even once you are into your holiday Helen was still in contact with me to make sure everything was as expected. Again, if you wanted a change along the way, they were only too happy to fix for you. My final itinerary became my nightly bible read so that I knew what was expected the next day. I got to meet with Helen when I reached Hanoi which was really nice.
I was so impressed with their service that I endeavoured to inform all the people I encountered along the way about their capabilities. I always felt very safe wherever I went and it was great being picked up from the airport & taken back. A great service if you want this.

Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia 2019

I went to the 3 countries listed in the title March of 2019 without any knowledge of the countries whatsoever. Asia Trip Deals was nice enough to send me information on all the countries I was visiting and also advise me on all the possible dangers. Also what was very relaxing and helpful was the person who helped me every single day of the tour, Helen Vuong. She kept in touch via WhatsApp every single day, gave suggestions on what was near my hotel, ensured all the tour guides treated me well, acted as a liaison in some cases, but most importantly became like an aunt to me and made sure I was safe and having fun. I truly got a family like experience from the company and I was doing this trip solo. It was unforgettable

Highly recommended Asia Trip Deals

I found Asia Trip Deals online through Trip Advisor which had rated this company 5 stars. I will say, it did not let me down. I was concerned about sending deposit via wire to Vietnam, but the personnel went above and beyond to reassure me of its legitimacy.
Once we got down to the business of creating an itinerary, I soon realized that the sky was the limit. We NEVER would have experienced Vietnam in the manner that we did had we had booked with a traditional US based tour company.
With the assistance of Helen, our travel agent liaison, I was free to choose the type of hotel, city, the level of activity, the variety of activities, as well as the pace of the entire trip. As I was traveling with my 27-year-old daughter, and knew that we had to have a lot of variety built-in to the itinerary. And Helen went above and beyond to make sure that we saw the highlights of Vietnam and Laos. We hiked to the top of waterfalls, we bike rode through rice paddies, we kayaked through the historic Ha Long Bay, we boated down the Mekong River, and enjoyed the festivities of the New Year in Luang Prabang, Laos.
Helen was attentive to the details, and arranged all the transfers from the airport to the hotel and all the activities in between. She responded quickly and with enthusiasm. She was willing to make last-minute changes to our itinerary because of heat, and for that I am thankful.
Our trip would not have been the same without Helen. She was gracious, kind, and responsive at all times given the 12 hour time change. We even had a chance to meet Helen in Hanoi, and I am so glad that I had a chance to personally thank her for making such a memorable trip. Hats off to you, my dear. My hope is that our paths cross again.
